February 2, 2022 saw Federal Decree Law 33 take effect. These new labour laws provide guidance and govern private-sector employment relations; repealing and replacing the 1980 Federal Law №8

A key thing to come out of this labour law change is the definition of work patterns, with conditions and rules of work patterns defined.

Definition Of Work Patterns

Previously, under Article 65 of Federal Law №8, types of work were defined as;

  • Full-time
  • Part-time (only under Ministerial Resolution)
  • Daily Working
  • Piece meal

Now, types of work are determined as;

  • Full-time
  • Part-time
  • Temporary working
  • Flexible working

It is expected that Self-employment, Condensed working weeks and Shared-job models will also be introduced

What Is Part-Time Work?

Part-time work, according to Federal Decree Law 33 is; “working for one or more employers for a specified number of working hours or days designated for work”.

Ogram has been pioneering part-time jobs in the UAE for some time. They have long espoused the benefits of working part time; supporting workers who want to supplement their income or have flexibility in where or when they work.

Part-time Work for Over 15 Year Olds

One of the other key things declared is that teenagers aged over 15 years of age can now work part-time; with conditions applied to the number of hours and employment times permitted.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has been quoted as saying that “the youth are our country’s most cherished asset”. The new rules governing the employment of juveniles are designed to protect them from exploitation and to allow academic studies to continue with relatively little impact.

The life and practical skills that are learned when working are invaluable; developing responsibility and organisational abilities; together with interpersonal skills. For a generation that experienced two years of schooling online, this is welcome news.

So, whilst the opportunity to have some cash in your pocket is attractive, the added bonus of Article 5 is that juveniles will learn to be self-reliant and confident.

Why Work Part-time?

Primarily, the part-time work offered by Ogram allows people opportunities for work that can be sculpted around their daily lives; whether it is to supplement an income in order to save for something or to learn new skills.

Now, juveniles have the opportunity to earn whilst in a formal education setting, without their learning being compromised.

Part-time work with Ogram allows workers to experience different industries and working environments. Some may even find that their future vocation lies within hospitality or logistics.

Part-time work also helps you to build a network of contacts and experiences. It could be meeting a future employer or someone who can provide reliable information for an academic project.

Demonstrating that you have worked whilst studying may also be a boon. Some future employers admire candidates who can show that have a good work ethic.
